Resumo: Historical novels take an important role of presenting, through a fiction view, some perspectives that sometimes have been seen only through one point of view, ignoring the diversity of the whole historical process. Thus, giving voice to subject peoples is one of the possibilities this kind of narrative provides, as in the historical novels A rainha Ginga e de como os africanos inventaram o mundo and A sul. O sombreiro, by the angolan writers Agualusa and Pepetela, respectively. In this way, this research aimed to interpret the aforementioned novels, focusing on the way that the protagonists of both works are characterized, that is, which aesthetic processes were applied in these representations and how the themes of slavery and anticlericalism were outlined; The presence of the jagas in the narratives shows how they play the role of constructing the counternarratives. To do this, some discussions are presented by literary critics, such as the dialogue between Literature and History, present in all of the texts, specially in the historical novels, which play an important role of recapturing the past. Some concepts and discussions concerning the counternarratives are highlighted, texts that work against the hegemonic discourse and the narrative itself, which are represented through the kinds of novels. The analyses are theoretically based on the assumptions of Dal Farra (1976), Weinhardt (2011), Veyne (1998), Albuquerque Junior (2007), Heywood (2017), Fonseca (2012), Mata (2012), (2014), Martins (2014), among others.

Dar voz a subjugados, portanto, é uma das possibilidades que essa modalidade narrativa possibilita, como ocorre nos romances históricos A rainha Ginga e de como os africanos inventaram o mundo (2014) e A sul. O sombreiro (2012), da autoria dos angolanos Agualusa e Pepetela, respectivamente. Diante disso, esta pesquisa tem por objetivo traçar uma leitura das duas narrativas mencionadas, tendo como foco perceber como os protagonistas de ambos os enredos são representados, ou seja, quais processos estéticos estão implicados nessas representações, bem como a maneira pela qual são delineados os temas da escravidão, do anticlericalismo e da presença dos jagas nas narrativas, enquanto artifícios para a construção de contranarrativas. Para isso, apresentam-se discussões propostas por críticos literários sobre aspectos como o diálogo entre a Literatura e a História, presente em todos os textos, principalmente nos romances históricos, que desempenham o importante papel de resgate do passado. Também se ressaltam conceitos e discussões sobre as contranarrativas, textos que se contrapõem ao discurso hegemônico, e o próprio ato narrativo, evidenciado pelos formatos de narração dos romances.
