This is the result of a developed work, that make up the PhD thesis theme is focused on reading practices present in society in the nineteenth century in Maranhão, with clipping between the years 1821 to 1831, the date of circulation of first newspaper and the installation of the first printing in Maranhão, extending throughout the First Empire when the province began to experience political debate and social, cultural and economic changes that provided them the construction of a new identity. It is an historical research, with the main source of research papers that circulated during this period in Maranhão, and how sustainability the advertisements published in them that provided clues to the understanding of the issues raised on the written culture, especially the presence of protocols of reading that, in general, are linked to surrounding or reading practices and culture and unique way to people in order to identify the relationships established in the triad book-reader-reading and, consequently, the social and personal consequences, from what was read, produced, sold or conveyed among the inhabitants of the province. Thus, there was also an investigation of social practices, including actions, subjects and social relations, instruments, objects, values, time and place, not drawing quite the past, but panning references that helped to understand the present. The text retraces the little trajectory of a press in Maranhão, instituted for the purpose of publishing the first newspaper of Maranhão, The Conciliator of Maranhão, whose path is also reconstituted as well as the other newspapers that circulated in the period studied, showing that they served not only to clarify ideas, but also to bring out liberal ideals. The key chapter derives from the information extracted about the printed produced by the local press, who were being traded by the market in Maranhão, those who were forthcoming local or external, those readings were intellectuals and journalists, considered the main builders of the reading practices of Maranhão the eighteenth century. An overview of the mediating institutions of the book and reading closes the circuit followed, showing that the arts such as music, painting and theater served to shape a society with peculiar critical training and that literary societies, the offices of reading, libraries and public schools or private were in fact true bastions of good education and freedom of peoples.
