Jornal do Brasil was first published in 1891, when the proclamation of the Republic still divided opinions among politicians, intellectuals, writers and people of the press. In the same year, Said Ali signs the first article of literary critique of the new periodical, until José Veríssimo assumes the post of head critic. In the leaflet Às segundas-feiras all our orderly literary life, obscured by political debates, went through a revision. At the turn to the 20th century, Osório Duque-Estrada transfers his column Registro literário , until then part of Correio da Manhã, to Jornal do Brasil, where it remains until 1927, year of the death of Carlos de Laet, a controversial collaborator and former arts critic of the paper. Duque-Estrada is then succeeded by João Ribeiro, who keeps the column Dia sim, dia não until 1934, when Múcio Leão becomes in charge of the literary critique. In the 30 s come into scene the first specialists in literature who graduated from university, which provided the clash between the foot-note critics, sovereign in the newspapers up to the 40 s, and the academics, more and more interested in taking part of the country s cultural life. In 1956 appears the Suplemento Dominical do Jornal do Brasil, which starts the editorial reform suffered by the carioca paper. Concentrating intellectuals and representatives of the most diverse artistic tendencies, the supplement soon assumed a position of vanguard, which becomes more radical when the ideals of concrete poetry figure in its front page. The Sunday session staged the split between concrete poets of Rio and São Paulo, making public a debate from which the echoes are still present, thirty years later, when Ferreira Gullar and Haroldo de Campos exchange insults on the pages of Idéias: suplemento de livros, the literary session created by Jornal do Brasil in 1986, year when the Brazilian editorial market went though an expansion never before seen, due to the process of political opening. In 2006, the supplement, now entitled Idéias e Livros, completed thirty years of existence, surviving to the successive financial crisis through which the newspaper has gone. Nevertheless, the polemics no longer take up the literary pages, currently occupied by reviews of a more divulging than analytical character. Even so, once in a while there is a debate involving the declarations of a critic, but it does not go past the reply. In order to trace the evolution of Brazilian literary critique, since the 19th century up to the present, we have appealed to the pages of Jornal do Brasil at various historical moments. Despite the changes suffered by the press and the social role attributed to the writer, it is possible to say that little has changed in the relation between journalism and literature. In the same manner as the novelists of the 19th century, contemporary writers continue to work at editorships in order to fulfill their material needs. The dilemma between survival and literary vocation still remains in our literary life
