This master thesis presented to the panel of the Postgraduate Program in Letters at the State University of Rio de Janeiro aims to explore the sonnets of the poet Joaquim Cardozo in his second book Signo Estrelado (1960). For this, we made a critical reading of all the editions of this publication, which were the edition prince of 1960, the edition contained in the volume Poesias Completas, 1971, with its second edition in 1979, the edition contained in the volume Poesia completa e Prosa, 2007, in order to establish the best text to have a more significant reading performance of the work. In addition to providing an overview of the poet’s reception by literary critics and how he was inserted in the historiography of Brazilian literature, under the pretext of claiming a place of greater relevance to the poet, since his poetry reaches a high level of excellence in several moments. For better use, the corpus was delimited to the tripartite composition “A Aparição da Rosa”. This composition is a set of three sonnets that integrate the section of ten sonnets “A Aparição da Rosa e outros Sonetos” collected in the book. From the exploration of sonnets, hypotheses were formulated about the individual characteristics of Cardozo in the production of this fixed form, analyzing the formal, rhythmic and metric aspects that lead the poet to a place of relevance in the history of Brazilian literature
