Nowadays, as much in Brazil as in foreign countries, samba is shown as a reference of brazility . But, to get the status for what is known at this moment, samba went over changes influenced by the brazilian social development and the media. Considering the new perspectives related to national identity studies, it was decided to research how representations of a music genre can be used by the mass media as a tool to compose the brazilian identity. In the event of this dissertation, the goal is to analyze how samba is represented by the newspaper O Globo in two distinct periods: from 1926 to 1928 and from 2000 to 2002. Thus, it will be possible to comply how the brazilian identity is taking shape along different ages. In order to render this research, it was made a theoretical raising over representations, mediations, identity and, of course, over samba. Moreover, a documentary research has occurred in the National Library and in the O Globo s Archive, in order to gather topics which quoting at least once the word samba. Later on, all the texts went over a reading analysis, which included a categorization process of the found representations. Such process besides the theoretical basis made in the first stage of the research revealed that, even with the new ways to understand the identity into contemporaneousness, samba is still an important element of brazilian identity. In other words, during a period of almost 20 years, samba is what took (and still does) happiness to millions of Brazilians , as said by Zé Ketti in his song A voz do morro.
