Resumo: | The growing increase in the automotive fleet around the world leads to an increase demand of lubricants. Esters from dicarboxylic acids, such as adipic acid, are considered an alternative to mineral lubricants since they can attend all the challenges imposed by the new machines, both technically and environmentally. The aim of this work was to study enzymatic synthesis of dioctyl adipate by esterification and transesterification reactions using lipase as biocatalyst and verify the physico-chemical properties of a lubricant for diesel engines formulated with the synthetized dioctyl adipate. The effects of molar ratio of reactants, concentration of commercial immobilized lipase Novozym 435, and reaction temperature were studied in the conversion and synthesis of dioctyl adipate. It was also studied the removal of water and ethanol, in esterification and transesterification reactions, respectively, as well as the comparison between the chemist catalyst (such as sulfuric acid) and enzymatic catalyst. Adipic acid conversion of 100% and dioctyl adipate molar fractionof0,99 were obtained with the reaction between adipic acid and octanolat 100ºC, using 7 wt.% of Novozym 435 and adipic acid/octanol molar ratio of 1:5 with water removal by free evaporation.Similar results were found in the transesterification reactions between diethyl adipate and octanol (conversion of 100% and molar fraction of dioctyl adipate of 0,92). Chemist catalyst showed similar results to enzymatic catalysis, but reaction took less time. The dioctyl adipate synthetized by both reactions (esterification and transesterification) showed good results for all physico-chemical tests performed. It also showed great results when used in the formulation of lubricant for heavy duty motor oil, when it was added in 2% v/v |
