This thesis has as its theme the Brazilian composer Carlos Gomes, highlighting two main aspects, the forgetting he endured from the beginning of the Republic until the 1920s and his transformation into a national hero in the 1930s. With the Proclamation of the Republic in 1889, political and aesthetic changes that had been taking place were concretized. Carlos Gomes, who represented the monarchical "past," had his image associated with a man of the Empire and "backwardness". In the 1920s, the modernist movement solidified. The Modernists argued that composer's work, which belonged to Romanticism, it didn’t qualify as Brazilian music because it followed European standards. In the 1930s, the memory of Carlos Gomes became part of the official program of the Getúlio Vargas government, which transformed the composer into a national hero, exalted as a national genius and an example of Brazilianness. Finally, the centenary of the composer's death was commemorated in 1996, his memory was once again celebrated, but in a manner and with different goals than the commemorations of the centenary of Carlos Gomes' birth in 1936.
