In the social sciences in general, the adequacy of Marxist theory to analyse and criticize the contemporary capitalist mode of production is being questioned, which causes it to lose space to other perspectives. As for critical criminology in particular, there is a debate in the literature concerning the existence of a crisis that would fall upon it. In view of these two scenarios, which are considered to be interrelated, the present thesis departs from the finding that, in the even more particular case of Marxist criminology, this crisis manifests itself in the reiterated employment of classic categories, which results in the development of not very renewed lines of research and, therefore, restrained in their explanatory and mobilizing potential. This shortcoming often leads researchers to distance themselves from Marxism, and to try to supplement it with references that are not always consistent with the original sense of the tradition to which they intend to remain aligned. Thus, it is necessary to seek ways to reinvigorate this way of investigating the criminal question, which has always proved absolutely fertile, by means of a return to Marx himself. The purpose of the thesis is to do so essentially on the basis of two authors who, in the recent past, sought to question the traditional reception of Marx's work precisely by pursuing the deeper meaning contained therein: the Hungarian philosopher György Lukács in his late work and the Canadian historian Moishe Postone. To accomplish this, we will first outline the perspectives of the two authors and then demonstrate the possibility of compatibility between them. Next, Marxist criminology will be scrutinised in order to detect convergent constructs with the criterion of revision privileged here, but mainly, in the opposite sense, traces of adherence to the referred traditional Marxism. This will be undertaken through a bibliographical review of authors whose works are undeniably considered milestones in the configuration of Marxist criminology. Criticisms will be made of the notions that deserve repair in the light of the intended re-examination. The conclusion is that much of the distance from the original theoretical framework on the part of criminological Marxism is due both to the persistence of these traditional notions in its theorizations and to a capitulation to the particular mystifications of capitalism itself in its current stage. At the end, points are indicated on which Marxist criminology could rely with a view towards the revitalization defended here.
