Our proposal in this thesis is to investigate the collection of Orlando da Costa Ferreira and to understand the possible implications of his research in the study of Brazilian design history. This investigation was based on the process of recovery, digitalization, organization and research of corpora gathered by Ferreira. We verified that the variety and transdisciplinarity of the material gathered shows evidence that Orlando da Costa Ferreira was a forerunner of the study of Brazilian graphic memory. For in addition to analysing the material from the usual perspective on the study of books, searching for content and reading practices, Ferreira sought a descriptive bibliography of the material, technological, and labor dimensions of the graphic artefact. In parallel, when analysing these corpora, it was still possible to visualize a vast and comprehensive historical panorama that contemplates significant transformations in the relationship between design and technology in the Brazilian printing industry, throughout the twentieth century. From this perspective, we sought to point out some changes that repositioned the field of design in the productive chain of the printing industry and the relations between graphic design and the means of production of the Brazilian printing industry within a given period. We also seek to deepen the study of the interconnections between design and technology, in order to verify where technology can possibly condition the project and, on the other hand, where the projective activities can break technological paradigms. In this sense, we understand that Orlando da Costa Ferreira, when analyzing products and graphic processes within this perspective and with a focus on material questions that only more recently interested the researchers in the area of book history, already contributed to the strengthening of the field of design in the Brazil, as an area of personal knowledge, still in the third quarter of the 20th century.
