This dissertation aims to analyze the identity representation of migrant women in the works The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros (1984), Girl in translation, by Jean Kwok (2011), and We need new names, by NoViolet Bulawayo (2014), which constitute as contemporary appropriations of the Bildungsroman, once the emphasis of the narratives falls on the formation trajectory of the protagonists since their childhood. Within a brief reconstruction of the Bildungsroman, we will understand how the works make such appropriation. The works that compose the theoretical corpus of this dissertation focus on the sense of belonging in minority social groups and discuss the identity formation of the characters, in order to understand how migration induces changes in the migrant’s identity configuration. Therefore, we will evoke several theoretical positions on the formation of identity, from authors such as Stuart Hall (2003), Dennys Cuche (1999), Claude Dubar (2007), and Manuel Castells (2018), to understand how the concept of identity has been modifying until postmodernity. With the support of the theories of Benedict Anderson (2008) and Zygmunt Bauman (2005), about national identity, we will seek to understand the dissolution of this concept in the migratory context. We will seek to evidence that, besides the cultural clashes, gender relations are another factor that affects the protagonists of the three novels.
