Resumo: This thesis consists of an investigation about what is cordel literature and how this manifestation of popular literature has been presented in the Portuguese Language didatic books dedicated to the second segment of Elementary School. From the analysis of the textbooks and considering the linguistic and cultural importance of this literature, reads are proposed about cordel poems selected according to the thematic adequacy to Elementary School in the light of Stylistics influenced by semiotic studies, Semantics and the dialogical perspective. The proposals for reading the strings concentrate on the analysis of nouns and adjectives/adjectives phrases, highlighting the value of these classes of words in the signic architecture of the texts, and emphasize the relations of meaning that can be established with other texts, in order to enrich the students reading ability and utilize their prior knowledge. This thesis defends the study of cordel literature in schools in order to enable students to learn about this popular poetics and to strengthen the students bond with the genuine culture of Brazil

A partir da análise dos livros didáticos e considerando-se a importância linguística e cultural dessa literatura, propõem-se leituras de poemas de cordel − selecionados de acordo com a adequação temática ao Ensino Fundamental II à luz da Estilística influenciada pelos estudos semióticos, da Semântica e da perspectiva dialógica. As propostas de leitura dos cordéis se concentram na análise dos substantivos e adjetivos/locuções adjetivas, destacando o valor dessas classes de palavras na arquitetura sígnica dos textos, e ressaltam as relações de sentido que podem ser estabelecidas com outros textos, de modo a enriquecer a habilidade leitora dos alunos e aproveitar seus conhecimentos prévios.
