This thesis lies at the intersection of two solid research traditions in Brazil: an urban sociology focused on the favela’s phenomenon and a sociology of work focused on the informality theme. In this direction, investigates the pathway of tradesmen based in favelas “pacificadas”. With this intention, the thesis develops two related arguments; first of all, from de already classic perspective of Veena Das e Deborah Poole (2004) developed in “Anthropology in the margins of the State”, understands the favela’s history (even current history) in Rio de Janeiro as a history of the production of an specific urban marginality; secondly, supports a concept of informality that seeks to overcome its implicit dichotomy and establish an original perspective for what was called as “informal urban sector”. In both cases, it lies on creating a history: in one hand, the urban reality and a public debate topic, and in the other hand, an academic matter with deep entailment with “social problems” considered typical of what Celso Furtado called “underdeveloped economys”. Furthermore, the thesis discuss the historical meaning of the cathegory “by your own” (as an occupational form) in Brazil and some of its constitutive features, outlining a panel of the brazilian job market’s structuring from – above all – the rereading of Cardoso (2010) on the renowed concept of regulated citizenship from Wanderley Guilherme dos Santos. From this perspectives, the thesis goes through the pathway of four (4) self-employed person whose business establishment are based on favelas “pacificadas”, with which it seeks to contribute to the sociological interpretation of the “pacification” phenomenon in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas.
