Resumo: The social mother is a professional who works full time denominated in shelter homes or residential homes, and should live together with young people housed, in order to develop the idea of family in these spaces. As the term indicates, this woman, placed entirely in position of a parent, should strive to take care of these young people as if they were their own children. The mother figure, a character in a crucial family composition, inhabits the shelter institutions, displaying tensions about what today would be a woman-mother. The religious bias is very present, turning this activity into donation; private life, in addition to those housed motherhood is not the case, exacerbated by the lack of contradiction a house out of that job, this marks a hybrid in living space. The sexual life before and at the time the work is scarce or did not happen and the construction of femininity is almost exclusively in the course of motherhood.

Como o próprio termo indica, essa mulher, colocada integralmente em um lugar de mãe, deve esforçar-se para cuidar desses jovens como se fossem seus próprios filhos. A figura da mãe, personagem imprescindível em uma composição familiar, habita as instituições de abrigamento, exibindo tensões a respeito do que seria hoje uma mulher-mãe. O viés religioso está muito presente, transformando essa atividade em doação; a vida privada, para além da maternidade daqueles abrigados, não acontece, acirrada pela contradição da inexistência de uma casa fora daquela do trabalho, o que marca uma hibridez no espaço em que vive.
