The objectives of this study were: to analyze the construction of the water polo sports field in the city of Rio de Janeiro; to identify the relation between water polo and other sports practices in the same period; to identify the representation of modernity and progress from the water polo field; to analyze the print media's view about water polo in the period of the study. To accomplish these objectives we used historiographical research. The results obtained in the data collection were interpreted based on two factors: i) the Bourdieusian concepts, mainly the field-capital-habitus triad; ii) the narrative literature review that sought to demonstrate the conformation of the sports field in Rio de Janeiro between 1900 and 1919. The primary sources were collected mainly from the Hemeroteca Digital. Among the various results, we highlight that, prior to the transit process of sports practice; we could verify the circulation of an idea of water polo that, in the eyes of the print media, was seen as a useful and salutarysport practice, as well as linked to the ideals of progress and modernity. This sport was first practiced on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, notably in the Center and South Zone, apparently encouraged by the participation of agents linked to foreign communities, such as France and England. The spread of the modality is intrinsically linked to creative strategies of subversion of the field, which sought to insert new sports practices within the Rowing Federation. Finally, we highlight that water polo was not only practiced by teams linked to the Federation, but also by the Navy and several other clubs
