Current methodologies often rely on manual setups or proprietary systems, which limit their scalability and flexibility. To address these challenges, the Platform for Optical Laboratory Automation and Research (POLAR) was developed, providing a scalable and low-cost solution for optical experiments. This integrated platform combines hardware components with a Python library, enabling researchers to automate workflows, control instrumentation, and streamline data acquisition and analysis. POLAR reduces equipment costs by up to 94% compared to commercial alternatives, making advanced optical experimentation accessible to a broader research community. The integration of Jupyter Notebooks enhances both usability and functionality by providing an interactive environment where researchers can execute code in individual cells, make dynamic adjustments during experiments, and visualize data in real-time. This approach improves reproducibility by consolidating code, results, and documentation into a single file, while the intuitive interface lowers technical barriers for researchers across various fields. Experimental validation included spectral characterization of a LED array. The deviation analysis revealed differences between the measured and nominal wavelengths ranging from 0 to 3.0 nm, with percentage errors consistently below 1%, confirming conformity with the manufacturer’s specifications. Fluorescence measurements of fluorescein and rhodamine B revealed characteristic peaks at 548 nm and 595 nm respectively, with concentration-dependent responses and distinct spectral shifts observed across both 96-well and 6-well plate formats. The platform demonstrated compatibility between the Ocean Optics USB650 spectrometer and the AS7265x sensor, presenting comparative absorption measurements with a normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) of 13.53% between the systems. The POLAR platform offers a flexible and accessible solution for the automation of optical experiments, demonstrating high precision in positioning, reliable spectral measurements, and versatile experimental configurations.
