In the Brazilian labor market, demands for deaf interpreters services have been increasing considerably, and qualified professionals have been called upon to compose teams of professionals. This research aims to analyze the academic productions carried out by deaf researchers, in order to discover trends, characteristics, and main discussions addressed in these researches. Based on these results, we intend to contribute with the creation of translation and interpretation policies for the deaf, since the work and research developed by deaf researchers are barely visible in Brazil. The theoretical references, we cite authors such as Boudreault (2005), Schäffner (2007), Meylaerts (2011), Pereira (2010), Santos (2013), Rodrigues and Beer (2015), Ferreira (2019) and Pinheiro (2020), as they bring up important reflections for the work on ETILS (Sign Language Translation and Interpretation Studies). With data surveys aimed at translators and interpreters, these authors point out the absence of deaf interpreters in ETILS research and mapping. Recently, Ferreira (2019) and Pinheiro (2020) carried out important mappings and discussed issues applied to the demands of deaf translators and interpreters. In the methodological part, this research has a qualitative approach, of the descriptive-documental type to represent and discuss academic productions in dissertations, theses, articles and book chapters that address deaf translators and interpreters. When investigating these important elements and observing the number of works, where they were published, and in which institutions, we believe we contribute to the visibility of deaf translators and interpreters. In addition, there are several ongoing researches and preliminary results show different demands, such as language pairs in different graduate programs in translation studies. Professional education, these professionals’ interpretive processes, the struggle for recognition, and professional valorization of deaf translators and interpreters are the most recurrent themes discussed in the dissertations analyzed in this research. Lastly, as a translation policy, we propose raising consciousness about the lack of visibility and respect for the deaf translator and interpreter ensuring that they have professional education and a fair remuneration for their work. Expanding the visibility of this category, the translation and interpretation policies should promote the empowerment of deaf sign language translators and interpreters in different professional contexts.
