Resumo: To characterlze areas of the irrigated part of the "Fazenda Experimental da Universidade Federal do Ceará" at the Curu River Valley, Ceará, Brazil, a set of soil determinations and analysis were made at the fields coded AT1, BT1, AT2, AA1, BA1, AT3 and BT3. Infiltration tests, wlth cilinder, infiltrometer, were made for alI fields, and the results plotted according to KOSTIAKOV'S equation. To characterize physically and morphologically the soils of the areas, four trenches were dug. Soil densities and hydraulic conductivities were also determined. Results of the analysis and determinations show a significant difference in water holding capacity between soil profile and among horizons within the same profile, due to differences in clay, silt, sand, organic matter and kinds of soil aggregates. Soil density increased with depth and with time, showing a tendency for compaction of the soil, probably due to the improper use of farm machinery within the areas. Soil compactness also explains the low hydraulic conductivity values encountered. This should also explain the low infiltration values found at the field tests.

This should also explain the low infiltration values found at the field tests.o presente trabalho foi desenvolvido na parte baixa da Fazenda Experimental do Vale do Curu (FEVC), pertencente à Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC) localizada no município de Pentecoste, distando 110 km de Fortaleza, em via asfáltica. A área selecionada correspondeu a uma parte do Perímetro Irrigado Curu-recuperação no baixio da FEVC. Considerou-se o trecho correspondente aos planos AT1. BT1, AT2, BT2, AA1, BA1, AT3 e BT3 conforme o planejamento agrícola da área da fazenda. Realizou-se testes de infiltração nos planos considerados, utilizando-se o cilindro infiltrômetro. Os dados obtidos foram plotados em gráficos de acordo com as equações de KOSTIAKOV. Quatro trincheiras foram abertas nos planos estudados com a finalidade de se caracterizar física e morfologicamente os perfis. Desta forma determinou-se a condutividade hidráulica em laboratório pelo método do permeâmetro de carga constante e aproveitando ainda as mesmas amostras, obteve-se a densidade do solo. Com amostras destorroadas a análise completa do solo foi feita pelo laboratório de solos da UFC. O trabalho desenvolvido na parte baixa da FEVC, foi dividido em dois perfis, "A" e "B". A área do perfil "B" no momento está sendo cultivada com arroz. Os resultados colhidos mostraram que houve uma diferença na retenção de água, tanto entre os perfis como entre horizontes de cada perfil. Isto foi devido provavelmente aos diferentes teores de argila, silte e areia. A densidade tendeu a aumentar um pouco com a profundidade e o mais importante foi que a mesma veio crescendo consideravelmente ano após ano, mostrando uma tendência de compactação das camadas estudadas. Isto se deve basicamente ao grande número de operações agrícolas, o movimento de máquinas e o manejo inadequado do solo. Inferiu-se que tanto o teor de argila como o arranjamento dos agregados, foram os fatores que influenciaram a retenção de água. A disponibilidade de água foi influenciada pelo teor de matéria orgânica, devido o solo ser texturalmente homogêneo. A condutividade hidráulica apresentou valores bem aquém dos citados na literatura, isto foi devido provavelmente a ação da compactação, que o solo vem sofrendo durante os anos.
