Resumo: The study aims to investigate the meaning of the work in the professional field workers from a sanitation company that carry out activities in sewage. The choice of this theme stems from the importance that the service has for the population and consequently the importance of sewage worker for the maintenance process of this service, as well as their perception of the meaning of his work at the individual, organizational and social context. The theoretical framework favors an approach to sewage where there are several aspects ranging from their definitions and other references in national sanitation companies and approach of the work, their meanings and senses in addition to the proposed research models: the model of work characteristics, the work model dimensions, the model components of the meaning of work and model of the meaning of work dimensions, which were used to prepare the research instrument in order to meet the specific objectives, analyzing the individual, organizational and social dimensions of work. This research is characterized as qualitative descriptive with method of primary data collection, carried out through semi-structured interviews with 20 workers who deal directly with the operation and maintenance of sewage, in a sanitation company. Among the results that the study expressed, is the fact that the work has meaning for these workers in all the surveyed dimensions, allowing for professional growth, appreciation, acknowledgment and self-realization of the person. Were evidenced also significant adverse events related to alienation, discrimination, autonomy and work routine.

A escolha dessa temática decorre da relevância que o serviço tem para a população e, consequentemente, da importância do trabalhador do esgoto para o processo de manutenção deste serviço, bem como sua percepção sobre o sentido de seu trabalho no âmbito individual, organizacional e social. O referencial teórico privilegia uma abordagem sobre esgotamento sanitário em que se verificam diversos aspectos que abrangem desde suas definições e demais referências em empresas nacionais de saneamento básico; uma abordagem sobre o trabalho, seus significados e sentidos, além dos modelos de pesquisa propostos: modelo de características do emprego, o modelo de dimensões, o modelo de componentes do sentido de trabalho e modelo das dimensões do sentido do trabalho, os quais foram utilizados para a elaboração do instrumento de pesquisa, a fim de atender os objetivos específicos, analisando as dimensões individual, organizacional e social do trabalho. Esta pesquisa é caracterizada como qualitativa, descritiva, com método de coleta de dados primários, realizada mediante entrevistas semiestruturadas realizadas com 20 trabalhadores que lidam diretamente com a operação e manutenção do esgotamento sanitário, em uma empresa de saneamento básico. Entre os resultados que o estudo expressa, está o fato de o que o trabalho possui sentido para estes trabalhadores em todas as dimensões pesquisadas, permitindo o crescimento profissional, a valorização, o reconhecimento e a autorrealização da pessoa.
