Este trabalho objetivou avaliar o desempenho no aprisionamento dos gases de aterro por diferentes materiais usados como camada de cobertura em uma Célula Experimental (CE) e na Célula Central (CC) do Aterro Sanitário Metropolitano Oeste de Caucaia (ASMOC). As estimativas das emissões de gases foram realizadas por meio de ensaios com placa de fluxo estático na cobertura convencional e nas coberturas alternativas, além das medições feitas nos drenos. Os gases gerados na CE e lançados pelo dreno continham, em média, 16,48% de CH4, 13,23% de CO2 e 11,10% de; já na CC, as médias de emissão de CH4 variaram de 48,20% a 62%, com volumes de CO2 variando de 28,45% a 40,43%, e concentrações de O2 bem baixas, variando de 0,02% a 6,4%. A CC permitiu o escape de, em média, 0,5% de CH4 e 0,3% de CO2 na CE, enquanto que a CC diferiu apenas na média de CO2 com 0,8%. A CE apresentou valores médios de fluxo mássico de CH4 na camada de cobertura de 0,78 g/m².s.10-2 e de 1,2x10-2 g/m².s, para CO2. Já a CC apresentou média de fluxo mássico de CH4 de 0,77 g/m².s.10-2 e de 1,54x10-2 g/m².s para CO2. No tocante às emissões pelas camadas alternativas na CE, a camada vegetada com grama Esmeralda teve melhor resultado entre as demais, mas ainda permitiu a emissão de 1,1% a mais de CH4, deixando escapar 4,3 vezes mais CO2 quando comparada à da cobertura convencional. O módulo da CC coberto com grama Esmerada conseguiu reter 50,8% mais CH4 e 24,6% mais CO2 que a camada de cobertura convencional; o capim Mombaça emitiu 13,4% menos CH4 que a camada convencional. A capina seca, apesar de emitir 12,4% a mais de CH4 que a camada convencional, melhorou em quase três vezes seu desempenho com relação ao experimento anterior. Já a camada sobreposta de capina seca-Cx emitiu 17,2% menos CH4 e 85,5% menos CO2 que a camada convencional. O RCC foi o material com o pior resultado entre todos os módulos analisados, 1820,9% a mais de emissão de CH4 e 1205,8% de emissão de CO2 para a atmosfera, se comparada à camada convencional de cobertura. Os fluxos mássicos em ambos os experimentos apresentaram uma ampla faixa de variação do CH4 e CO2, o que indica que vários fatores externos à célula são responsáveis por esta variação, porém seguem um comportamento congruente às emissões de CH4 e CO2 fortemente influenciadas pelo regime de chuvas.
