The changes suffered by the sociocultural patterns related to “being female” resulted in new models of “being male”, considering that all the elements involved in any social organization mutually influence each other. Taking into account the social transformations that have been taking place in the traditional molds that regulate gender relations, this research aims to broaden the spectrum of Feminist Criticism by taking as its object of study the male figure in the books Lavoura Arcaica (Archaic Farming) and Um Copo de Cólera (A Glass of Anger), written by Raduan Nassar, in his problematic relations with the patriarchal universe. Through the analysis of these two works, we investigate how the new gender relations move away from and/or maintain a link with the patriarchal tradition. Mainly, we examine how male behaviors seem to no longer be associated with the concept of “hegemonic masculinity”. In order to do this, we work with the observation of the representation of the figures of women and men in selected works of Brazilian literature through a comparative perspective; with the analysis of the interpersonal relationships presented between the Nassarian protagonists and those with whom they live (or those with whom they decide not to live); and with the investigation of the identity construction of the characters, from the perspective of gender studies. In order to develop our analyses, the theoretical foundation was built, above all, by studies related to Feminist Literary Theory and Criticism, with emphasis on researches developed by Elaine Showalter (1994), Edilene Ribeiro Batista (2006), Elódia Xavier (1998), Heloísa Buarque de Hollanda (1994), Simone de Beauvoir (2016), Gayatri Spivak (1994) and Hélène Cixous (2017). Other relevant names in the Human Sciences also supported our research, such as Stuart Hall (2011) and Pierre Bourdieu (2007), in Sociology; Michel Foucault (2004), in Philosophy; Antonio Candido (2006) and Leyla Perrone-Moisés (2016), in Literary Criticism; Malvina E. Muszkat (2018) and Sócrates Nolasco (2006), in the areas of Psychology and Psychotherapy. In addition to the scholars listed, the comparative method that guides our work led us to dialogue with the work of icons of national literature.
