The expansion of cities, combined with inefficient planning policies, may imply a disorderly occupation of urban space, which can lead to problems related to accessibility and urban mobility. According to the integrated planning paradigm, the problems of accessibility to urban activities result from land use distribution inadequacies and from transport supply inefficiencies. The ocurrence of this problems may lead to inequalities in access to activities, which can be observed on a spatial, social and temporal scale. In Fortaleza, inequalities in access to work between low- and high-income socioeconomic groups have increased in recent decades. However, the impact of the informal labor market on these inequalities is not known. In this context, the main objective of this research is to understand the socio-spatial inequalities in accessibility to formal and informal employment in Fortaleza. In order to achieve this objective, it was first estimated the spatial distribution of the different socioeconomic groups in Fortaleza. The distribution of formal and informal Jobs was also conducted. In addition, the elements of the transport supply were spatially characterized and, from the selection of an appropriate indicator, the accessibility levels of the different socioeconomic groups throughout the territory were measured. Finally, based on the hypotheses of study, it was conducted an exploratory analysis of the spatial dependence relationships between the elements of transport supply and the land use distribution, and the inequalities in accessibility to formal and informal employment, based on the analysis of spatial correlation between the variables. From this analysis it was possible to obtain a better understanding of the determinant aspects for the maintenance of the inequalities in acess to opportunities and, in particular, what are the impacts of informal employment in reducing or worsening them.
