This paper aims to examine the possibilities offered by poverty approach from the perspective of international human rights law, analyzing the effectiveness of this approach in the specific context of Brazilian reality. Poverty can be seen as one of the consequences of globalized capitalism. Thus, the analysis restricted to the domestic context of each state may prove limited. This finding raises the relevance of international human rights law. Based on these assumptions, this study investigates how international human rights law can cooperate to minimize poverty. For this, first we seek to contextualize the problem of poverty in the contemporary world, especially in the face of the globalization phenomenon. Then we seek to identify a concept of poverty in line with the most current theories on the subject and in particular the ideas worked within the United Nations. In a third step, care is taken to compile the human rights standards relating to poverty, as well as the theories tending to justify facing this problem with a human rights approach. Finally, focusing on the Brazilian reality, we investigate the degree of effectiveness and the possibilities opened by the use of human rights as a tool for poverty reduction in Brazil. The study undertaken showed that the human rights approach is appropriate and useful in the field of combating poverty in the Brazilian reality, although many horizons opened by this outlook remain unexplored. The undertaken research was basically bibliographical and documentary, including international treaties, the 1988 Federal Constitution of Brazil, reports by the UN, as well as jurisprudence of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Brazilian Supreme Court.
