Resumo: The aim of this study is to investigate the nursing care for parturient women baseei on the nurses’ perceptions under humanitarian views. Five nurses, who work during morning, eveníng and night shifts ai the Normal Delivery Unit, were the basis of this study. The data was collected during the months of Juíy and August of 2002 at a public federal maternity with 205 beds. It was conducted opened observation and recorded interviews for data collection. Data analysis was supported by Bardin’s (1977) framework and also Paterson and Zderad's (1988) humanistic theory. The results showed that the humanised care during birth is understood in the following categorias: individual care, emotional support, professional evolvement during birth, feeling secure during birth, nurse’s concern for humanised care, rewarding humanized care, unknowledge of humanised care. We concluded that nurses find necessary to reorganise the Service and change the atíitude before birth. We suggested better professional care to empower the nursing humanised care for parturient women and make the nurse's assistance be genuine.

Os sujeitos deste estudo foram cinco enfermeiras que trabalham no Centro de Parto Normal (CPN), nos turnos da manhã, tarde e noite. A coleta de dados ocorreu nos meses de julho e agosto de 2002 tendo como cenário para o desenvolvimento do estudo o CPN de uma maternidade pública federal, com capacidade de 205 leitos. Optou-se pela observação livre e entrevista com uso de gravador. Os dados analisados foram apoiados em Bardin (1977), na operacionalização da temática e das categorias, fundamentados à luz da teoria humanística de Paterson e Zderad (1988). Dos resultados foi possível vislumbrar que o cuidado humanizado no partejar é compreendido a partir das seguintes categorias: cuidado individualizado, apoio emocional, o envolvimento dos profissionais durante o partejar, necessidade de segurança no partejar, preocupação da enfermeira quanto ao cuidado humanizado, cuidado humanizado recompensador, desconhecimento do cuidado humanizado. Concluiu-se que as enfermeiras reconhecem ser necessária a reestruturação do serviço e mudanças de atitudes diante do partejar.
