Resumo: Actually, there is an increasing demand for plant-based drugs, especially by minor side effects that they have compared to synthetic drugs. The use of medicinal plants has been well accepted by the population, also because of its low cost, and is growing in the medical community. Plant extracts have shown relevant biological activities. So, the phytochemical study becomes vitally important in the search for potentially active molecules, as well as, the characterization and identification of new molecules. Tephrosia egregia belongs to the Fabaceae family, that has about 300 species included in its genus. In Brazil, it occurs mainly in the Northeast region, where it “anil bravo”. Tephrosia genus is a source of chalcones, flavones, flavonols, isoflavones, rotenoids, biflavones, pterocarpans and steroids. Many of these metabolites are biologically active, showing antitumor activity, antiviral, insecticidal, etc. Phytochemical investigation of Tephrosia egregia led the isolation and indentification of secondary metabolites, and evaluation of gastroprotective and cytotoxic activities of extracts and isolated compounds of this plant.
