Resumo: The study regarding the theme of suicide is a field of major importance in the Psychological science. Suicide ideation and, more specifically, suicide attempts and suicides are a serious public health problem. In this context, the present study’s main goal is to evaluate the variables proposed by the three-step theory of suicide (3ST) in a Brazilian context. Specifically, we aim to analyze if the model proposed by this theory – which counts with the following variables: pain, hopelessness, connectedness and suicide capacity -, can explain the activation process of suicidal ideation until the transition to the attempt itself; and if it is also possible to differentiate groups at higher risk for the development of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. For that, a quantitative research was carried out divided in two empirical studies. The first one had as main objective the validation of the instruments necessary to carry out the research, while the second one aimed to test the hypotheses proposed by 3ST. In study 1, we counted on a sample of 288 people and, in the study 2, with a sample of 318 people - both samples coming from the general population. Participants, in addition to answering sociodemographic questions, with the purpose of characterizing the sample, answered a booklet composed of a battery of psychometric measures. In general, the proposals of 3ST were adequate for the Brazilian context; with the onset of suicidal ideation predicted by hopelessness and emotional pain, connectivity functioning as a protective factor to prevent the development of active ideation; and, finally, suicidal capability differentiating ideators from attempters. Based on these results, this study was able to contribute to the field of suicide research in Brazil, providing the empirical identification and confirmation of relevance for several important variables in the understanding of suicide. In addition, it is indicated that future interventions and prevention programs are based on these mentioned variables.

In addition, it is indicated that future interventions and prevention programs are based on these mentioned variables.O estudo sobre a temática do suicídio é um campo de grande importância na ciência psicológica.
