Tradução e adaptação transcultural da Spinal Cord Injury Secondary Conditions Scale

This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt to Standard Portuguese Language of Brazil to Spinal Cord Injury Secondary Conditions Scale. This is a methodological study conducted in six phases, namely: initial translation, translation synthesis, back translation to the original language, committee review of expert judges of the area, translated version pretest and content validation. Study participants were five translators and five judges in translation and adaptation phase and the pre-test was performed at home on 30 people with traumatic spinal cord, with two instruments: social-demographic and clinical characterization forms and the application of Spinal Cord Injury Scale Secondary Conditions - Translated version. After the cross-cultural adaptation the content validation was held using the trial of items by 17 experts in the field of spinal cord injury. In order for the analysis of the data translation and cultural adaptation were used frames and a descriptive analysis was carried out. The social-demographic data of the pre-test were compiled and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 19.0, and presented in tables. In order for the analysis of the judges’ agreement statistical calculations as the Content Validation Index (CVI) and the kappa coefficient was used. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Ceará, with opinion No. 562,694. The results show that in the first two versions, T1 and T2, there were not significant differences between translations. In summary translation, the translator achieved the most items of T1. In the phase back translation, the translation did not have significant differences of the original questionnaire, being the differences in charge of the use of synonyms. In the review phase by the judges’ committee, there was a meeting to evaluate the semantic, idiomatic, experimental and conceptual of each questionnaire item in order to identify and resolve all inconsistencies of previous translations, thus the pre version Spinal Cord Injury artwork of Secondary Conditions Scale - Translated version was concluded. Then the scale was applied in the pre-test in patients with spinal cord injury and some terms were further clarified in order to produce the final version. At the content analysis the CVI was 0.95, and the individual values, only one of the items had CVI below the recommended, however the instrument was properly considered valid in the content. The conclusion, therefore, was that the translated version of Spinal Cord Injury Secondary Conditions Scale is a reliable, clear and comprehensive instrument to assess the secondary conditions of spinal cord injury. With this study, health professionals will have a scale to better health assessment, enabling the planning of interventions and care, whereas also assist in the expansion of the scientific community knowledge.
