This dissertation intends to analyze matters of objectivity and subjectivity in comics journalism through analysis of two works by comics journalist Joe Sacco: Palestine and Journalism. With one of the works being a nonfiction book published by an independent comics publisher, and the other a collection of pieces done for different journalism companies, the dissertation proposes that it is possible to see in Sacco’s work different ways comics can create journalism, at times moving close to traditional structures, at other times proposing alternatives to them. This work will do a historical revision of the concept of “journalistic objectivity”, central for the understanding of decades of traditional journalism, and one of the matters of most notable distinction between Sacco’s works. There will also be a historical revision of the relationship between journalism and image: which image media have been prioritized in which historical moments, for which moments, and how have comics fared in that context. In the end, the dissertation will analyze both Sacco works, using an adaptation for the comics medium of the methodology Analysis of Objectification and Subjectification Acts, created by Mayara de Araújo in her 2018 dissertation. The research concludes that Joe Sacco amply uses both types of acts, preferring one or the other in accordance to the demands of the format he’s working on, practical matters of the production process, and stylistical preferences.
