This thesis aims at investigating how the design of subtitles in videos with on-screen texts influences reading processing. Subtitling, within Translation Studies, is a type of audiovisual translation. Depending on the type of subtitle produced, it can be considered a form of intralinguistic, interlinguistic, or intersemiotic translation. These categories of subtitles commonly include image-based narratives, known within the subtitling industry as "on-screen texts.”, whose use is quite common, and they often compete with the subtitle information presented. For this purpose, an experiment was prepared with 6 videos in two experimental conditions: condition 1 (total subtitles) and condition 2 (partial subtitles). The experiment was built in Experiment Builder using the EyeLink 1000 Plus eye tracker. Four random lists (A, B, C, and D) were assembled to display the videos, ensuring that the order of video display does not influence the results, and the data were analyzed in Data Viewer. The analysis was conducted through eye-tracking methods, focusing on metrics based on the participants' fixation on both areas of interest and responses to a post-collection questionnaire about the video content. The results lean towards the direction that partial subtitles may be more effective in contexts where there is redundant on-screen text, suggesting that a subtitle design that avoids redundancies and optimizes the presentation of visual information can enhance the viewing experience and viewer comprehension. It is hoped that the results obtained can provide valid data for the methodological construction of research focused on eye movement during the reading of subtitles in videos with on-screen texts.
