Tese (Doutorado em Educação) – Universidade Federal do Ceará, Faculdade de Educação, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação Brasileira, Fortaleza-CE, 2006.This study deals with scavenger children’s quality of life and work, highlighting the subjective meanings of garbage collection and the (de)formation of the scavenger child as a social being. This research was motivated by the observed children exploitation, their daily roaming, the excessive load on their puny bodies under the sun and the rain. Long-lastingly, the children try to complement the family income or their own survival. With the family, in pairs or by themselves, the children collect what is left from the city day. The investigation was carried out in Granja Portugal district, in Fortaleza, and the main subjects were 11-year-old scavenger children, beyond their parents and educators. Considering the capitalist society contradictions, this research starts from the objective reality which these subjects live in to understand their singularity. The theoretical input used is based upon Leontiev studies (1978, 1986), which deals with the main activity and formation of the subject in the historic-cultural psychology; Marxian-Lukacsian ontology aspects concerning work as a social being’s founding category; Heller studies (2001) about the daily and non-daily life as spheres of man’s social activity. When discussing the individuation, schooling and daily life process, Duarte (2001) is also a reference used in this study, to maintain the theoretic-practical coherence. The results show that in an early insertion in the adult world, the children mingle with the other scavengers in garbage dumps. There, they learn, in conversations, about profit, change, school grant, sex and, above all, exploitation. That makes them feel half adults, half children, confusing them in the definition of their main activity. The school that receives these kids, not actually receiving them, also reinforces the negative image of them, what interferes in the definition of their main activity. Consequently, that reaches the child’s singular individuality, overshadowing their subjective free expression. This way, instead of being presented as social-historic subjects, which give them the human emancipation prospect, the scavenger children are seen as objects of social protection, as well as control and discipline objects. These presentations created by the men in the capitalist sociability crystallize the scavenger children’s subjectivity in the everyday life sphere.A pesquisa trata das condições de vida e trabalho de crianças catadoras, destacando os significados da catação de lixo em sua subjetividade, por conseguinte, a (de)formação da criança catadora como ser social. O motivo que impulsionou a investigação advém da percepção da exploração sofrida por essas crianças em sua perambulação cotidiana, da carga excessiva que carregam sobre os corpos franzinos, sob sol e chuva. Diuturnamente, saem em busca do lixo, tentando garantir a complementação da renda familiar ou a manutenção de sua existência, e junto com a família, em dupla ou sozinhas recolhem os restos do dia da cidade. A investigação foi realizada no Bairro Granja Portugal em Fortaleza, tendo como sujeitos principais crianças catadoras na faixa etária de oito a 11 anos, além de seus pais e educadores. Considerando as contradições próprias da sociabilidade do capital, partimos da realidade objetiva na qual vivem tais sujeitos para compreendê-los em sua singularidade. O aporte teórico utilizado na pesquisa tem por base os estudos de Leontiev (1978, 1986) sobre atividade principal e a formação do sujeito na psicologia histórico cultural, aspectos da ontologia marxiano-lukacsiana no que diz respeito ao trabalho como categoria fundante do ser social, estudos de Heller(2001) sobre vida cotidiana e não-cotidiana como esferas da atividade social do homem. Duarte (2001) ao discutir o processo de individuação, escolarização e vida cotidiana também é referência por nós adotada nesta pesquisa, buscando manter a coerência teórico-prática tão cara a análise do problema. Os resultados nos mostram que em um processo precoce de inserção no mundo adulto, as crianças catadoras misturam-se aos demais catadores nos depósitos e sucatas e aprendem, nas conversas, sobre troco, lucro, sexo, bolsa-escola e, sobretudo, exploração, o que faz com que passem a se sentir meio adultos, meio crianças, confundindo a criança na definição de sua atividade principal. A escola que as recebe, sem efetivamente receber também constrói e reforça uma imagem negativa da criança que cata lixo o que interfere na definição do que é sua atividade principal, e, por conseguinte, atinge sua individualidade singular, ofuscando a livre expressão de sua subjetividade.
