Dissertação (Dissertação em Geologia) - Universidade Federal do Ceará, Fortaleza, 2018.Despite the importance and the various works carried out in the Brazilian continental margin, and specifically on the continental shelf, there are still few works in the continental slope, particularly in the slope of Piauí. Therefore, the present dissertation reflects the knowledge gap on the continental slope of Piauí and its purpose is its sedimentological characterization. The study was carried out through the testimonies SIS 720 and ANP 1286, located on the continental slope of the Piauí coast, which are about 91 and 105 km off the coastline, forming the western portion of the Ceará Basin, sub-basin of Piauí-Camocim. From the cartographic survey, bibliographical survey, field activities and laboratory analyzes, the sedimentological characterization of the region was performed. The testimony SIS 720 consists of bioclastic sediment, silt fraction, classified as calcareous vasa. This sediment is composed mostly of whole carapaces of organisms such as planktonic and benthic foraminifera, with less minerals such as quartz, potassium feldspar, kaolinite and ilite. The testimony ANP 1286 is composed of bioclastic, biosiliciclastic and silicibioclastic sediments, both of silt fraction, composed of different proportions of foraminifera carapaces, kaolinite and quartz. These different classifications are due to the strong variation of the calcium carbonate contents in the testimony, marking changes in the sedimentation. The high content of CaCO3 present in the region is given by the large amount of shells of organisms, indicating an environment where little dissolution of carbonate occurs. The minerals present are the result of the alteration of granitic rocks and mark the influence of terrigenous sediments in the region, it is suggested that these have reached the slope by means of gravitational flows. The presence of kaolinite marks the humid tropical climate, where accentuated processes of hydrolysis occur. The predominance of the sediment of the silt fraction indicates a low energy environment with slow deposition of these sediments. The lower continental slope of Piauí is marked by the strong influence of pelagic sediments, high CaCO3 contents, with a lower contribution of terrigenous sediments, quartz, feldspars and clay minerals, thus being the environment created by the joint action of continental and marine processes. It is hoped that this study will provide support for a better understanding of this depositional environment.Apesar da importância e dos vários trabalhos realizados na margem continental brasileira, e especificamente sobre a plataforma continental, ainda são poucos os trabalhos realizados no talude continental, particularmente no talude do Piauí. Portanto, a presente dissertação reflete a lacuna do conhecimento sobre o talude continental do Piauí e tem como finalidade a sua caracterização sedimentológica. O estudo foi realizado através dos testemunhos SIS 720 e ANP 1286, localizados no talude continental do litoral do Piauí, os quais distam cerca de 91 e 105 km da linha de costa, compondo a porção oeste da bacia do Ceará, sub-bacia de Piauí-Camocim. A partir do levantamento cartográfico, levantamento bibliográfico, atividades de campo e análises laboratoriais foi executada a caracterização sedimentológica da região. O testemunho SIS 720 é constituído por sedimento bioclástico de fração silte, classificado como vasa calcárea. Este sedimento é composto em sua maioria por carapaças inteiras de organismos como foraminíferos planctônicos e bentônicos, em menor quantidade têm-se minerais tais como quartzo, feldspato potássico, caulinita e ilita. O testemunho ANP 1286 é composto por sedimentos bioclásticos, biosiliciclásticos e silicibioclásticos, ambos de fração silte, compostos por diferentes proporções de carapaças de foraminíferos, caulinita e quartzo. Essas diferentes classificações se dão em razão da forte variação dos teores de carbonato de cálcio no testemunho, marcando mudanças na sedimentação. O elevado teor de CaCO3 presente na região é dado pela grande quantidade de carapaças de organismos, indicando um ambiente onde ocorre pouca dissolução de carbonato. Os minerais presentes são resultantes da alteração de rochas graníticas e marcam a influência de sedimentos terrígenos na região, sugere-se que estes tenham chegado ao talude por meio de fluxos gravitacionais. A presença de caulinita marca o clima tropical úmido, onde ocorrem processos acentuados de hidrólise. O predomínio do sedimento da fração silte indica um ambiente de baixa energia com lenta deposição destes sedimentos. O talude continental inferior do Piauí é marcado pela forte influência de sedimentos pelágicos, altos teores de CaCO3, com uma menor contribuição de sedimentos terrígenos, quartzo, feldspatos e argilominerais, sendo assim o ambiente criado pela atuação conjunta de processos continentais e marinhos.
