Construção do impeachment de Dilma Rousseff em jornais regionais: uma análise dos editoriais de O POVO e Gazeta do Povo

This dissertation undertakes a content analysis of the editorials of two regional newspapers – O POVO (OP), from Ceará, and Gazeta do Povo (GP), from Paraná – with the aim of examining to what extent electoral preference, influenced by regional factors, helps to explain the editorial stance of these publications. A total of 60 editorials were analyzed (OP=31; GP=29), published between March 13, 2015 – marking the beginning of the pro- and anti-Dilma government mobilizations – and August 31, 2016, the date of the definitive removal of President Dilma Rousseff. The content analysis evaluated framing and positioning based on the following variables: Causes of the impeachment, Those responsible for the crisis, Consequences of the impeachment, Solutions to the political situation, and Position regarding the interruption of the presidential term. The study, using these variables, tested the following hypotheses: (a) it is possible to observe, in the comparison between O POVO and Gazeta do Povo editorials on the impeachment of then-President Dilma Rousseff, a regional political parallelism; (b) both newspapers follow an anti-Workers' Party (PT) alignment, commonly observed in southeastern press outlets.The results indicate that, despite substantive differences, it cannot be stated that there is ideological polarization between the newspapers analyzed. Therefore, both hypotheses were partially supported by the evidence found. O POVO adopted a more centrist stance, maintaining a neutral approach in three variables (consequences, solutions, and position on the impeachment), while Gazeta do Povo showed a clear anti-PT alignment, attempting to discredit the image of the president, Lula, and the Workers’ Party, accusing them of corruption, clientelism, and of being a threat to the country. Thus, the empirical research highlights an asymmetric regional parallelism (a concept built upon previous related studies), in which the reference press from certain regions or states adopts a more pronounced right-wing political stance, while others maintain a more centrist posture.
