Grammatical tradition registers Portuguese as a language in which the expression of the pronominal subject should be avoided, arguing that its verbs would already have marks that would indicate the person of speech and the number of that person (singular or plural). However, studies within the scope of Variationist Sociolinguistics verify an increasingly frequent use of expressed pronominal subjects, demonstrating a series of factors that lead to this use. We are, therefore, facing a phenomenon that can occur in the following variant forms: presence of a subject pronoun (On my last trip, I went to Espírito Santo [...]) and absence of a subject pronoun ([...] a state that [Ø] was already familiar with [Ø] having gone other times, but [Ø] I confess that with the rush and my time [...]). Among the various works of literature on this subject, that of Paredes Silva (1988) warns us about the importance of considering the discursive context in which the utterances are inserted, since this context determines the uses of language. Thus, we hypothesize that factors such as ambiguity, emphasis and discourse connection influence the choice for one or another variant. We also seek to investigate the force exerted by textual-discursive genres in this choice. We analyzed 54 opinion articles, 226 reader letters, 14 chronicles and 11 travel reports published in blogs, totaling 305 texts. The analysis was performed on each grammatical person, individually. Our results demonstrate the importance of these factors, with the controlled variables showing to be statistically significant and operating within the expected hierarchies. Thus, we seek to contribute to studies about the subjects expression, especially with regard to written texts.
