A voz tem gênero? : uma revisão de estudos sociofonéticos

This research is a critical review of 17 socio-phonetic studies on gender variation. The axial points for the analysis were Butler's (1990) concept of gender performativity, Cameron's (2011) critique of gender essentialism in linguistics, and Cameron's (2020) perspective on the relationships between performativity and power relations. The theoretical contributions of these authors and their convergences for the critique of the selected socio-phonetic studies are analyzed. The studies were divided into three categories for analysis: Theory and Critique of Gender Binarism, Analyses of Gender Performativity, and Acoustic and Perceptual Analyses. Each study's main ideas, theoretical contributions, methodology, and relevance were highlighted, along with a brief critical analysis of their theoretical and methodological framework. A critique of gender binarism in socio-phonetics is drawn, observing the studies' considerations on gender performativity, the subversion of gender norms, the deconstruction of the naturalization of gender differences in speech, and the investigation of social context and power relations. It concludes that these studies are important for understanding the complexity of vocal perceptions and the influence of social and cultural norms in their construction, yet certain theoretical and methodological choices end up validating the naturalization of vocal identities. Other studies explore how vocal performances are modulated in different contexts, how they contribute to the construction of gender identities, and how they can challenge traditional norms and promote a more critical and inclusive understanding of vocal identities. It is understood that by combining qualitative and quantitative methods, socio-phonetics has great potential to provide a theoretical and methodological basis for questioning binary norms and exploring the multiplicity of vocal identities
