Social Security is configured as a set of rules that organizes the form of worker protection when, for whatever reason, has loss or reduced work capacity, in order to undermine their livelihoods and their families. Complementing its range, stands out among the social insurance programs offered by the National Social Security Institute (INSS), the vocational rehabilitation service that aims to provide its beneficiaries, disabled partially or totally to work, the means given for the re-entry in the labor market and the context in which they live. Therefore, this study aimed, in general, to describe, from the standpoint of the relationship between health and work, the configuration of the absence from work for long distance truck drivers in pension benefit and indication of vocational rehabilitation by the INSS. The specific objectives were to find aspects of the work of long distance truck drivers; identify and describe the factors related to the disease process perceived by participants; investigate and analyze the meanings attributed to the process of absenteeism among participants; verify and discuss the confrontation strategies used by participants in regarding the situation of absence. The study included 13 long distance truck drivers who received sickness benefit pension. The 13 participants answered a questionnaire on sociodemographic characteristics and brief information about their employment history and then were interviewed individually based on a semi-structured script. The interview transcripts were subjected to content analysis and problematized in light of Francophone Ergonomics and Clinics of Labor under the guidance of ergological approach. The results showed aspects of professional identity and development of these workers, who consequently revealed crossings in their modes of getting sick. Such elements that manifest from experiences at work as well as some characteristics and working conditions of the profession, provide clues able to enroll the absence from work of this group as a result of health problems, generally related to the current organization of road transport loads. Another characteristic feature of this remoteness, is that generally occurs later with worsening morbidities, evidencing the influence of ways of dealing with the illness in the process. Furthermore, the data point to the need for constant improvement of the shares of Social Security considering the lack of attention to the particularities of a given professional group in the assessment and monitoring provided under the INSS.
