The present work analyses the malaria situation in Marabá, a municipality situated in the south east of Pará - Brazil. To attain this objective, the author traces the world panorama of the disease back to the beginning of the nineties and shows the links between the environmental conditions and the ease at which the illness spread. Historical data concerning the geographical areas affected by the disease and Brazil s territorial occupation are presented in such a way that we are able to identify the principal patterns of the territorial occupation responsible for the spreading of the disease in the northern region of the country. With the help of remote-sensing techniques as well as secondary data obtained from official sources of information, an analysis has been drawn up of the malaria situation in Pará, a state where the greatest annual number of cases was registered between 1994 and 2002. The analysis of the situation in Marabá led to the identification of the principal factors that contribute to the maintenance of the elevated number of registers presented by this municipality. In the final considerations, the author presents the results of the analysis and some limitations that, at present, prevent the control of the illness in this municipality and in other endemic areas in the country.
