The implantation of mariculture in the state of Espírito Santo started experimentally in the county of Piúma, in the year of 1987. In the last 17 years, the activity has been implanted, commercially, in 5 other counties in the state through projects that had similar objectives but different strategies. Among the counties that had implanted the mariculture we point out Anchieta and Guarapari, the greatest producers of mussels Perna perna in a commercial scale in Espírito Santo. The hypothesis that the techniques of divulging, administration and implementation of mitiliculture in the state of Espírito Santo are not efficient in what involves the continuity of the target community in the activity, this was the starting point for realization of this dissertation. The main objective is to describe the implementation of the mitiliculture in culture farms , located at the counties of Anchieta, Guarapari and Piúma, in the state of Espírito Santo, considering social, environmental and economical aspects inherent to the activity and characteristics of each farm . The specific objectives are: a) the survey of the main challenges and deficiencies of the activity in each county; b) the description and the comparison of the development in the different culture farms , and the participation of the maricultures in each of them; c) the creation of a Mitilicultura Activity Development Indicator (MADI) for each site of production; d) the verifying of IDAM influence on the mitiliculture development and sustainability in the county; and e) the analysis of the created indicator and its implication as a comparison parameter of mitiliculture development on different culture farms . For the data survey maricultures and technicians were interviewed (open and semi-structured interviews); the application of a closed questionnaire was also made with some maricultures. Moreover, the participant observation and the bibliographic revision were used as complementary forms for the obtainment of data in field. The results point out the importance of the work realized with the community in a way to make it a key factor of the implementation and administration process, seeking sustainable development. A better organization of the financial sources become necessary to serve effectively the needs of the maricultures, adjusting the existent credit lines to the profile of them, contributing for the growth of the activity. Equally, the organization of the producers in associations and/or co-operative societies will enable the increase of the trade area of the product with the expansion of the consumer market through the obtainment of county and/or federal inspection seals. The social-economical differences among the counties show that is necessary a government intervention seeking fomentation and strengthen the activity. The survey of the supply sources of indispensable products for the construction and maintenance of the production structures also has to be done, opening, if necessary, a new market area as a form to stimulate the growth of the activity and to guarantee its sustainable development.
