Resumo: The current study aimed to investigate the occurrence of / r / in English as a foreign language spoken by Italian-Brazilian people in the cities of Concórdia and Chapecó in the state of Santa Catarina. The hypothesis is that there might be an influence of Portuguese / Italian contact on the learning of American English language. According to the interviews and taking the study of the phenomenon as the main topic, students in the final grades of middle and high school do not transfer the tepe [ ] nor the multiple vibrant consonant [r], but the voiceless velar ̆ fricative [x] in the English language spoken in schools of the cities of Chapecó and Concórdia. Thus, the transference of / r / does not differ between the cities investigated and there was no influence of Portuguese / Italian contact in the English language spoken. The selection of speakers, the formulation of the interview and data analysis were conducted from the perspective of multidimensional and relational dialectology, through free conversation, quiz and reading styles.

A hipótese era que pudesse haver uma influência do contato português/italiano na aprendizagem do inglês americano. A partir do estudo do fenômeno, por meio de entrevistas, detectou-se que os estudantes das séries finais do Ensino Fundamental e Ensino Médio não transferem a pronúncia do tepe [ ] tampouco a vibrante múltipla [r̆], mas sim a fricativa velar desvozeada [x] na língua inglesa falada nas cidades de Chapecó e Concórdia. Dessa forma, constatou-se que a transferência do /r/ não se difere entre as cidades investigadas e que não há influência do contato português/italiano na língua inglesa falada pelos informantes.
