Resumo: INTRODUCTION: The work of teachers in public basic schools has been characterized by high demands and low pay and working conditions, which may influence the physical and mental health and therefore the quality of life of these professionals. OBJECTIVES: To assess the quality of life of elementary school teachers in Goiânia, Goiás and socio-demographic factors correlate with the domains of quality of life questionnaire Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). METHODS: A cross sectional, which evaluated 190 elementary school teachers from 15 public schools in Goiania, in the period april to july 2010. The instruments used were a socio-demographic questionnaire and the instrument for assessing quality of life SF-36. The instruments were socio-demographic questionnaire and an instrument for assessing quality of life SF-36. RESULTS: Most were female (88.40%), the mean age of 38.7 ± 9.2 years and the average length of service was 12.7 ± 8.3 years. The workload of teachers was 50.50% exceeding 40 hours. In the general quality of life, pain and vitality domains showed the lowest scores (64.03 and 62.02) respectively. The older teachers with more than 22 years of service in the area had the worst score Functional Capacity and teachers with 11 to 21 years of service had worse pain score in the field. Those with more hours had a worse score in the field Vitality, Social Functioning, Limitations on the Emotional Aspects and Mental Health. The female teachers had the worst scores in the Functional Capacity, General Health and Mental Health. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that pain and vitality were the most affected areas and the age, length of service, workload, and gender contributed to the worsening of the Functional Capacity, Pain, General Health, Vitality, Social Functioning, Limitations on Emotional and Mental Health Aspects of quality of life is considered necessary for public policies that act as both a preventive and curative education. The integration of occupational health with women's health should be thought of as the majority of elementary school teachers are female and the female gender proved to be an important factor for the decrease in some areas the quality of life.

OBJETIVOS: Analisar a qualidade de vida dos professores de ensino fundamental da cidade de Goiânia, Goiás e correlacionar os fatores sóciodemográficos com os domínios do questionário de qualidade de vida Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal, no qual foram avaliados 190 professores de ensino fundamental de 15 escolas municipais de Goiânia, no período de abril a julho de 2010. Os instrumentos utilizados foram um questionário sóciodemográfico e o instrumento de avaliação de qualidade de vida SF-36. RESULTADOS: A maioria era do sexo feminino (88,40%), a média de idade de 38,7 ± 9,2 anos e a média do tempo de serviço era 12,7 ± 8,3 anos. A carga horária de trabalho de 50,50% dos professores era superior a 40 horas semanais. Na avaliação geral da qualidade de vida, os domínios Dor e Vitalidade apresentaram as menores pontuações (64,03 e 62,02) respectivamente. Os professores mais velhos e com mais de 22 anos de serviço tiveram pior pontuação no domínio Capacidade Funcional e os professores com 11 a 21 anos de serviço apresentaram pior pontuação no domínio Dor. Aqueles com maior carga horária apresentaram pior pontuação no domínio Vitalidade, Aspectos Sociais, Limitações por Aspectos Emocionais e Saúde Mental. Os professores do sexo feminino apresentaram piores pontuações nos domínios Capacidade Funcional, Estado Geral de Saúde e Saúde Mental. CONCLUSÃO: Concluiu-se que Dor e Vitalidade foram os domínios mais afetados e os fatores idade, tempo de serviço, carga horária de trabalho e gênero contribuíram para a piora dos domínios Capacidade Funcional, Dor, Estado Geral de Saúde, Vitalidade, Aspectos Sociais, Limitações por Aspectos Emocionais e Saúde Mental da qualidade de vida Considera-se necessárias políticas públicas que visem agir tanto de forma educativa quanto preventiva e curativa.
