Resumo: | The dissertation is aimed at the study being presented theoretical and experimental verification of the performance of artificial sand come from crushing the rock of granite-gneiss in relation to natural sand. Currently, the sand has artificially low commercial value of the market and is considered a "some kind of piece of marginal material ", whose purpose is not defined and remained stored in the courtyards of the quarries, forming huge piles that cause various environmental impacts. In addition to this, the traditionalism and the lack of information has led to an unwarranted mystification of this material. The methodology used for the tests of the research was based on standardized tests, which attempt to meet the objectives of the dissertation, in addition to enhancing the development of techniques to search for alternative aggregates. This has examined the influence of artificial sand in place of natural sand, with different proportions, and focuses on quality of the concrete in plastic and hardened its phases, taking into account the mechanical, elastic, physicalchemical, environmental and economic. The work was to characterize the material that composed the concrete studied. After this phase, were up corpses-of-proof concrete, using 15 (fifteen) different traits, so that the natural sand was gradually replaced by artificial sand, in proportions of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. For each trait was quantified its rebate, density, air incorporation, resistance to axial compression, traction, deformation module, absorption by immersion, alkali-aggregate reaction and an economic evaluation. It is considered that the main objective of this research has been fully achieved, because it was proven the theoretical feasibility of replacing part or even all, of natural sand by artificial sand in conventional |

Atualmente, a areia artificial possui baixo valor comercial de mercado, sendo considerado um material marginal , cuja destinação não está definida, permanecendo estocado nos pátios das pedreiras, formando enormes pilhas que provocam vários impactos ambientais. Somando-se a isto, o tradicionalismo e a falta de esclarecimentos têm levado a uma mistificação injustificada deste material. A metodologia utilizada para a realização dos ensaios da pesquisa foi baseada em ensaios normalizados, onde se buscou atender aos objetivos da dissertação, além de alicerçar o desenvolvimento das técnicas de pesquisa para agregados alternativos. Para tal, foi analisada a influência, da areia artificial em substituição da areia natural, com diferentes proporções, e avaliouse qualidade do concreto em suas fases plástica e endurecida, levando-se em conta os aspectos mecânicos, elásticos, físico-químicos, ambientais e econômicos. O trabalho consistiu em caracterizar os materiais que compuseram o concreto estudado. Após essa fase, foram confeccionados corpos-de-prova de concreto, utilizando-se 15 (quinze) traços diferentes, de modo que a areia natural foi gradualmente substituída pela areia artificial, nas proporções de 25%, 50%, 75%, e 100%. Para cada traço foi quantificados o seu abatimento, massa específica, ar incorporado, resistência à compressão axial, tração, módulo de deformação, absorção por imersão, reação álcali-agregado e uma avaliação econômica.
