Resumo: Prepositions play a major role in communication by establishing a logical link between the elements of language, which are necessary parts of the linguistic structure. (BORBA, 1971). In this regard, one of the motivations to research this object of study came up from correcting essays, in which noticed that among all class of words, prepositions are one of the most difficult domain because it presents a diversified nuance meaning so students restrict the use of prepositions to their most general functions. Thus, the theme of this dissertation came up: the study of the use of prepositions in essays for college entrance exams under the analysis of Ecolinguistics. The goal was to investigate how the domain and the use of spatial and variant prepositions are given in textual productions in order to verify what extent these uses are in accordance with the principle of the ecology of space relations and if they deviate from it, how and why. In order to verify whether the limited use of prepositions, in which more specific degrees of meanings are avoided, have implications for the communication and understanding of these textual productions. As a theoretical contribution, we use Ecolinguistics, which is the study of language interactions within the linguistic ecosystem that may be natural, mental or social (COUTO, 2013a), and the Ecology of Space Relations, stating that all prepositions are reduced to spatiality, and not only the temporal, but also the abstract, or notional, as Bernard Pottier (1962) had already demonstrated. We selected 40 essays related to college entrance exams of the Federal University of Goiás for the years of 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 made available by the Selection Center. In our analysis, we prioritized data that were representative, so we opted for a relatively small number of essays so the data would not became exhaustive. Methodologically, the research in question characterizes as qualitative, starting from an ecological posture, having as auxiliary criterion a previous quantitative analysis. It was possible to notice that from the perspective of Ecolinguistics, prepositions have their own meaning. Therefore, spatial use is its prototypical sense that serves as a starting point for the evolution and the semasiological expansion of prepositions. Other meanings are derived or motivated results of this process, showing that only the dialectic between Onomasiology and Semasiology is able to give a holistic account of the different uses that the prepositions present as Couto (2012) already claimed.
