The subject of this work was to study the adaptation of a logistics service company - the Expresso Nepomuceno S / A, based in Lavras, Minas Gerais State - to obtain accreditation as a provider of logistics service for the chemical industry. The general objective of the study was to describe and analyze the process of the certification of the company using the System for Evaluation of Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SASSMAQ) - a tool for classification, assessment and certification for providers of logistics services to companies within the chemical segment. The SASSMAQ is inserted in a broad context, related to the action of the Brazilian Association of Chemical Industry, an association of private interest. The specific objectives of the research were: to describe the context, procedures and components of the SASSMAQ; identify key investments and the difficulties encountered by the company regarding the certification process; and to assess the effects of the accreditation. The research undertaken here was qualitative, with descriptive and exploratory approaches. As a method, the case study was adopted and the data collection techniques used were bibliography, reviews of existing records and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that the major investments required for adaptation were related to acquisition, construction and adaptation of infrastructure; the main difficulties were related to the processes of obtaining required licenses; and the main effects were the increase of the number of customers of the chemical segment and the growth in the turnover of the company. It was concluded that, as the requirements of SASSMAQ are not matched, the provider of logistics services is excluded from the chemical segment market and that the fulfillment of such requirements includes the provider in such a sector and gives opportunities for acting in a wider universe.
