Resumo: | The demand for castor seed oil increases every year due to its many industrial uses and its use as biofuel. In order to meet that demand different castor bean handling techniques have been implemented, with emphasis on the cultivation during the off-season in rotation with other crops, high density planting and irrigation. This research was conducted to determine the crop coefficient (Kc) of castor bean with high density planting under the weather conditions in Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brazil, using a drainage lysimeter. The determination of Kc depends on an adequate estimation of reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and the measurement of crop evapotranspiration (ETc) of interest. Three drainage lysimeters were used to measure crop water use. Each lysimeter is 1.2 m x 1.4 m in surface area and 1.2 m deep. Eight seedlings of castor bean cultivar Al Guarany 2002 were planted in the lysimeters with 0.3 m spacing between plants and 0.7 m between rows. In one lysimeter a battery of tensiometers was installed at depths of 0.1; 0.2; 0.4; 0.6; 0.8 and 1.0 m for soil moisture monitoring and control of replacement of drained water. The ETc was recorded in the range of 5 to 12 days, as indicated by the end of the drainage. ETo was estimated by the Penman-Monteith-FAO. From the ETc/ETo the Kc was obtained for various periods during the crop cycle. The ETc and Kc were considered by the average values observed in the three drainage lysimeters used. ETc values found in the initial growth, intermediate and final stages were 1.65; 3.07; 9.14 and 5.85 mm d-1 respectively. Kc values for the corresponding phases were 0.98; 1.41; 2.11 and 1.65 respectively. |

Com o fim de atender a referida demanda, diferentes técnicas de manejo da mamoneira têm sido desenvolvidas, destacando-se o cultivo no período de safrinha em rotação com outras culturas, o plantio adensado e a irrigação. O presente trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de determinar o coeficiente de cultura (Kc) da mamoneira em plantio adensado nas condições climáticas de Lavras, Minas Gerais, utilizando-se um lisímetro de drenagem. A determinação do Kc depende de uma adequada estimação da evapotranspiração de referência (ETo) e da medição da evapotranspiração da cultura (ETc) de interesse. Para tanto, foram utilizados três lisímetros de drenagem, com dimensões de 1,2 m de comprimento, 1,4 m de largura e 1,2 m de profundidade. Nos lisímetros foram plantadas oito mudas de mamoneira da cultivar Al Guarany 2002 com espaçamento de 0,3 m entre plantas e 0,7 m entre linhas. Em um dos lisímetros foi instalada uma bateria de tensiômetros nas profundidades de 0,1; 0,2; 0,4; 0,6; 0,8 e 1,0 m para monitoramento da umidade do solo e controle da reposição de água drenada. . A ETc foi contabilizada no intervalo de 5 a 12 dias, conforme se observou o fim da drenagem. A ETo foi estimada pela equação de Penman-Monteith-FAO. A partir da relação ETc/ETo obteve-se o Kc para os diferentes períodos ao longo do ciclo da cultura. A ETc e o Kc foram considerados pela média dos valores observados nos três lisímetros de drenagem utilizados. Os valores de ETc encontrados nas fases inicial, de crescimento, intermediária e final foram 1,65; 3,07; 9,14 e 5,85 mm d-1 respectivamente.
