Resumo: | This dissertation aimed to investigate the role of indirect anaphors in constructing the humor present in André Dahmer’s comic strips, highlighting the interaction between referential mechanisms and meaning-making in this textual genre. Situated within the broader field of Textual Linguistics (TL) and guided by a fundamentally functionalist-discursive approach, the research focused on analyzing the dynamics between verbal and visual elements—a marked characteristic of humorous comic strips. With this in mind, the study was driven by one central question: how do indirect anaphors contribute to the process of constructing humor in André Dahmer’s comic strips? To answer this, three objectives were articulated in close relation to the general aim: a) to identify the most recurring types of indirect anaphora in Dahmer’s strips; b) to examine how these referential mechanisms influence the construction of humor; and c) to investigate the linguistic and grammatical aspects that underpin this process, with a focus on the function of the identified indirect anaphors. The theoretical framework combined various perspectives to support the analysis. First, it considered the role of linguistic structures in communicative function, as proposed by Givón (1995), Neves (2018), Cunha (2020), Mondada and Dubois (2003), Cavalcante (2015), and Custódio Filho and Brito (2014), within a functionalist perspective. Next, it addressed the principles of multimodal literacy based on Catto (2013), Rojo and Moura (2019), Jewitt (2002), Kenner (2004), Kress (2010), and Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006), emphasizing the interaction between visual and verbal elements. Finally, it included the study of humorous discourse with contributions from Possenti (2010) and Travaglia (1990), along with theories of textual cohesion and coherence (Antunes, 2009) and reference (Cavalcante, 2017; Marcuschi, 2005).The dissertation also explored how referential mechanisms contributed to textual cohesion, particularly in sustaining meaning construction and comic effects. Moreover, the study examined the interaction between the verbal and visual dimensions, highlighting the multimodal nature of the strips and its relevance in humor production. The results revealed that indirect anaphors play a central role in the semantic structuring of humor in the strips, acting as cohesive elements that facilitate the interaction between different parts of the text and the reader’s reception of comedic nuances. They serve as linguistic and grammatical resources that ensure textual cohesion and broaden interpretation. These mechanisms not only establish connections among the discourse components but also engage the reader’s active decoding of the humorous subtext, which repeatedly subverts initial expectations and continuously contributes to the creation of unexpected meanings—a hallmark of Dahmer’s humor.Overall, the research, as proposed, contributes to a broader understanding of the discursive and multimodal processes that characterize this textual genre, while also reinforcing the importance of referential relations in language studies. |

This dissertation aimed to investigate the role of indirect anaphors in constructing the humor present in André Dahmer’s comic strips, highlighting the interaction between referential mechanisms and meaning-making in this textual genre. |
