The objectives of this study were to analyze morphologically the gametes, the events of fertilization and initial development of the pirapitinga Brycon nattereri. The B. nattereri oocytes were weakly adhesive, wine or brown colored, the micropyle was present at the animal pole, and the surface contained a smooth zona radiata with simple pore-canals. Most of the oocytes were with complete vitellogenesis with middle or slightly eccentric nucleus. Neutral polysaccharides were detected in the zona radiata and yolk globules, carboxilated polysaccharides in cortical alveoli and both neutral and carboxilated polysaccharides in follicular cells. Semen was white with milky appearance, volume of 5.6 mL and concentration of 42 x 109 sperm per mL. The spermatozoa were primitive, ovoid-shape head without acrossomal vesicle, short midpiece and long flagellum with axonemic arrangement type 9+2. There were some events responsible for the prevention of polyspermy: a funnel-shape micropylar canal which reduce the number of spermatozoa that come in contact with the perivitelinic space; the formation of a fertilization cone that rejects the supernumerary spermatozoa and pushes them out of the micropilar canal and; supernumerary sperm agglutination inside the micropylar canal and perivitelline space caused by cortical material released from the alveoli. The larvae hatched 50-54 hours after fertilization, at approximately 19°C. The newly-hatched larvae were poorly developed, completely depigmented, devoid of mouth or swimming ability, a total length of 6.32 mm, and a large yolk-sac of 3.64 mm3. The opening of the mouth occurred 3-4 days after hatching and the total reabsorption of the yolk sac after 10 days, coinciding with the beginning of the exogenous feeding. During the 15 days of evaluation, no cannibalism was observed. According to the morphometric analysis at 14 months of age, the B. Nattereri body shape is more rounded near the head and more compressed laterally on the back of the body. A sex ratio of 1:1 (male: female) was observed. At 14 months of age, most of the males presented testes in maturation, while the females presented immature.O trabalho foi realizado na Estação de Piscicultura da Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais (Itutinga, MG) nos meses de maio e agosto de 2006 e de 2007. Os objetivos gerais deste estudo foram analisar morfologicamente os gametas, os eventos da fertilização e o desenvolvimento inicial da pirapitinga Brycon nattereri. Os ovócitos do B. nattereri são levemente adesivos, de coloração vinho ou marrom, apresentando micrópila no pólo animal e superfície constituída por zona radiata lisa com poros-canais simples. A maior parte dos ovócitos das fêmeas estudadas estava com vitelogênese completa e núcleo central ou ligeiramente excêntrico. Foram detectados polissacarídeos neutros na zona radiata e nos glóbulos de vitelo, polissacarídeos carboxilados nos alvéolos corticais e polissacarídeos neutros e carboxilados nas células foliculares. O sêmen possui coloração branca e aspecto leitoso, volume médio de 5,6 mL e concentração de 42 x 109 espermatozóides por mL. Os espermatozóides são do tipo primitivo, com cabeça ovóide sem vesícula acrossomal, peça intermediária curta e flagelo longo com arranjo axonêmico do tipo 9+2. Os eventos observados na fertilização mostraram que existem vários fatores responsáveis pela prevenção à polispermia, entre eles: o canal micropilar em formato de funil restringindo o número de espermatozóides a alcançarem o espaço perivitelínico; a formação do cone de fertilização que rejeita os espermatozóides supranumerários e os encaminha para fora do canal micropilar e a aglutinação dos espermatozóides supranumerários no canal micropilar e no espaço perivitelínico por meio da liberação do conteúdo dos alvéolos corticais. A eclosão das larvas ocorreu entre 50-54 horas após a fertilização, na temperatura média de 19ºC. As larvas recém-eclodidas são pouco desenvolvidas, totalmente despigmentadas, desprovidas de boca ou de capacidade natatória, apresentando 6,32 mm de comprimento total e um grande saco vitelínico, com 3,64 mm3. A abertura da boca ocorreu entre o 3º e o 4º dia após a eclosão e a reabsorção total do saco vitelínico após 10 dias, coincidindo com o início da alimentação exógena. Durante os 15 dias de avaliação das larvas, não foi observado canibalismo. A análise das medidas morfométricas corporais, aos 14 meses de idade, mostrou que o B. nattereri apresenta-se mais arredondando na região próxima a cabeça e vai se tornando mais comprimido lateralmente na parte posterior do seu corpo. A proporção sexual observada foi de 1:1 (macho:fêmea).
