Resumo: | Referencing is one of the most widely explored topics in Textual Linguistics (TL). Despite advances in research on this subject, several issues related to it have been redefined, whether due to the need for a review and deepening of theoretical concepts or the necessity of addressing phenomena arising from the social uses of language in response to new modes of interaction, particularly digital ones. This dissertation aims to analyze how referencing occurs in multimodal texts, focusing on the animated charge genre. The choice of this genre is justified by its approach to everyday issues, broad social circulation, and multimodal configuration, allowing proposals that involve the liveliness of language and socio-political critique. With that in mind, discussions on the charge genre are based on the works of Romualdo (2000), Souza and Machado (2005), and Teixeira and Angelo (2010), while the research of Rojo and Barbosa (2015), Ribeiro (2018), and Rojo and Moura (2019) supports the understanding of multimodal language, a characteristic of texts that circulate socially. Regarding the context of cyberculture, the concepts of Lévy (1999) and Santaella (2003) are revisited. Furthermore, the discussion on the phenomenon of referencing is based on the studies of Cavalcante (2011; 2022), Mondada and Dubois (2003), Koch, Morato, and Bentes (2012), Silva (2012), Lima and Feltes (2013), Cavalcante, Custódio Filho, and Brito (2014), Fontinele and Carvalho (2022; 2023), and Koch (2002; 2010; 2012; 2023), which provide essential theoretical foundations for the analysis. To exemplify occurrences of references and the meaning effects generated by the choices made in multimodal textual production, the animated charge titled Questão Pedagógica (2017), created by Maurício Ricardo, was selected. As a result, this dissertation reinforces previous research, confirming the complexity of this process. Broadly speaking, three main points stand out: (i) the enunciative nature of referencing, as there may be a relationship between texts that creates a situation of dependency, wherein referential introduction occurs in one text and its resumption appears in another; (ii) the presence of referencing processes triggered by interactions in digital contexts, where different texts interact with each other, resuming and reclassifying a referent within an enunciative chain; and (iii) the specificities of referent construction in texts of this nature, which is carried out through choices among different semiotic resources that, when combined, contribute to the introduction, resumption, and/or reclassification of a referent. These specificities contribute to an analysis of the referencing process in multimodal texts that goes beyond (co)textual materiality. In the case of animated charges, linguistic choices go beyond the mere construction of referents; they also guide their representation, highlighting implicit stances and intentions. Therefore, this research confirms that various semiotic resources interconnect in the construction of a communicative project, significantly impacting how meanings are produced and interpreted by the audience. |

Therefore, this research confirms that various semiotic resources interconnect in the construction of a communicative project, significantly impacting how meanings are produced and interpreted by the audience.

Referencing is one of the most widely explored topics in Textual Linguistics (TL). |
