The main objective of this research is to investigate criteria for selecting audiovisual materials for educational purposes in high school and is composed of two articles and one educational product. The first article, a bibliographic review, presents the characteristics of technical and aesthetic foundations of audiovisual materials for pedagogical mediation in high school, based mainly on the works of Benjamin, Flusser, Costa and Sijll. The second article, using an exploratory qualitative methodology, is based on interviews with high school teachers from three state schools in Minas Gerais, analyzed using Bardin's content analysis. It aims to diagnose the use of audiovisual materials by high school teachers and to reflect on the importance of audiovisual theory and practice as a teaching skill, including excerpts from the interviews, related to concepts by Benjamin, Flusser, Duarte, Napolitano, Morán and Migliorin, among other authors. The two articles aim at another objective: the selection of some audiovisual materials as examples that can be used by educators, which, together with practical teaching proposals, resulted in the product: an educational guide for high school teachers who wish to add audiovisual materials to their classes, with concerns and explanations that can be reflected upon and understood by teachers who are not used to studying audiovisual aesthetics and techniques, so that educators from the most diverse areas can learn about audiovisual literacy and its practice in the classroom.
