Resumo: This dissertation entitled “For the Right to Decide”: Reproductive Autonomy and Female Voluntary Sterilization in São José de Ribamar, Maranhão aimed to analyze how the materialization of reproductive rights through voluntary sterilization has contributed to the construction of female reproductive autonomy in the municipality of São José de Ribamar, Maranhão, focusing on its relationship with women’s reproductive autonomy. The study is grounded in the understanding that reproductive autonomy constitutes a fundamental dimension of sexual and reproductive rights and is directly related to the social, institutional, and cultural conditions that influence women’s decisions about reproduction. Although voluntary sterilization is a procedure guaranteed by Brazilian legislation and offered within the Unified Health System (SUS), obstacles that may hinder access to this right still persist. This is an analytical, qualitative study that used semi-structured interviews with women who sought or underwent voluntary sterilization and reside in São José de Ribamar. However, due to difficulties encountered in data collection, the study adopted a referral technique among participants known as the Snowball sampling method. The results made it possible to identify specific aspects related to the participants’ reproductive trajectories, the institutional pathways followed to access the procedure, structural barriers affecting the exercise of reproductive rights experienced along the way, as well as the strategies mobilized to ensure access to tubal ligation. The findings also indicate that, although there are institutional and bureaucratic barriers to accessing the procedure—such as gender inequalities and concrete limitations in access to alternative contraceptive methods—voluntary sterilization occupies a central place in these women’s reproductive trajectories. It is perceived as a “natural” choice that converges toward a possible autonomy, constructed within a restricted set of options. Female responsibility emerges as a strategic element in consolidating decisions previously built throughout life, enabling the prevention of pregnancy, greater control over economic conditions, and family organization. It is concluded that voluntary sterilization may represent an important instrument for the exercise of female reproductive autonomy, provided that it is framed within ethical, social, and political dimensions and guaranteed under equitable access conditions, with adequate information, professional healthcare support, access to reliable alternative contraceptive methods, respect for women’s decisions, and the strengthening of public policies for reproductive planning within the SUS and a secular State.

O estudo parte da compreensão de que a autonomia reprodutiva constitui dimensão fundamental dos direitos sexuais e reprodutivos e está diretamente relacionada às condições sociais, institucionais e culturais que influenciam as decisões das mulheres sobre sua reprodução. E, embora a esterilização voluntária seja um procedimento garantido pela legislação brasileira e ofertado no âmbito do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), persistem obstáculos que podem dificultar o acesso a esse direito. Trata-se de uma pesquisa analítica, de natureza qualitativa, que utilizou como procedimentos a realização de entrevistas semiestruturadas com mulheres que buscaram ou realizaram o procedimento de esterilização voluntária, residentes em São José de Ribamar. Contudo, ante dificuldades no levantamento na coleta de dados, adotou-se a técnica de indicação entre entrevistadas, denominada Bola de Neve. Os resultados permitiram identificar aspectos singulares relacionados às trajetórias reprodutivas das participantes, caminhos institucionais percorridos para acessar o procedimento, obstáculos estruturais que atravessam o exercício dos direitos reprodutivos, vivenciados no percurso, bem como as estratégias mobilizadas para garantir a realização da laqueadura. Indicam ainda que, embora existam barreiras institucionais e burocráticas no acesso ao procedimento (desigualdades de gênero e limitações concretas no acesso a alternativas contraceptivas), a esterilização voluntária ocupa um lugar central em seus percursos reprodutivos, “escolha” natural que converge para uma autonomia possível, construída dentro de um conjunto restrito de opções. Responsabilidade feminina, estratégica para consolidar decisões previamente construídas ao longo da vida, permitindo inibir gravidez, maior controle sobre condições econômicas e organização familiar. Conclui-se que a esterilização voluntária pode representar importante instrumento para o exercício da autonomia reprodutiva feminina, desde que esta seja circunscrita em dimensões ética, social e política, garantida em condições de acesso equitativas, com informação adequada, acompanhamento profissional de saúde, a insumos contraceptivos alternativos e confiáveis, respeito às decisões das mulheres e fortalecimento das políticas públicas de planejamento reprodutivo no âmbito do SUS e do Estado laico.CNPqapplication/pdfporUniversidade Federal do MaranhãoPROGRAMA DE PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO EM POLÍTICAS PÚBLICAS/CCSOUFMABrasilDEPARTAMENTO DE SERVIÇO SOCIAL/CCSOdireitos reprodutivos;autonomia reprodutiva;esterilização voluntária;Políticas Públicas;reproductive rights;reproductive autonomy;voluntary sterilization;Public Policies.Políticas PúblicasPelo direito de decidir: autonomia reprodutiva e esterilização voluntária feminina em São José de Ribamar/MAFor the right to choose: reproductive autonomy and voluntary female sterilization in São José de Ribamar/MAinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisDIAS, Marly de Jesus Sáhttp://lattes.cnpq.br/0576152814937497LEMOS, Silse Teixeira de Freitashttp://lattes.cnpq.br/4996834589974140LIMA , Cristiana Costahttp://lattes.cnpq.br/2505039602134305DIAS, Marly de Jesus Sáhttp://lattes.cnpq.br/0576152814937497http://lattes.cnpq.br/8858424026724675FERREIRA, Marília Samália Martinsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Institucional da UFMAinstname:Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA)instacron:UFMAORIGINALMarilia_Samalia_Martins_Ferreira.pdfDissertação de Mestradoapplication/pdf884498https://riufma.ufma.br/bitstreams/1db580a5-6017-4a88-8aab-5682fa18833b/download82ca4724478a5c3a58405f55db48a867MD51trueAnonymousREADLICENSElicense.txttext/plain;
