Resumo: This research aims to analyze the discourses of deaf individuals posted on WhatsApp status updates, focusing on the argumentative strategies and multimodal resources employed. It is grounded in French Discourse Analysis, Argumentation Theory, and Rhetoric, with emphasis on the notion of pathos and the argumentative modalities proposed by Amossy (2007, 2008). The study assumes that, in digital environments, the enunciator mobilizes both verbal and non-verbal elements to affect the audience, constructing meaning through expressive resources such as emojis, images, and the alternation between Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and Portuguese. The corpus comprises posts by three deaf high school students from a public school, collected from WhatsApp status updates between March and July 2023. The categories of analysis include the pathemic argumentative modality, the use of visual markers (emojis), the construction of ethos, and the articulation between different semiotic modes. The analysis reveals that the digital discourse of deaf individuals exhibits argumentative strategies marked by emotional appeals, interactional practices, and features of deaf culture, all enhanced by the multimodal nature of the platform. The research is also based on studies in Social Semiotics, particularly the contributions of Kress (1998) and Kress and van Leeuwen (1996, 2011), to discuss the role of images and visual composition in meaning making in digital environments.

Submitted by Daniella Santos (daniella.santos@ufma.br) on 2025-09-10T17:58:36Z No. of bitstreams: 1 William_Cardoso.pdf: 5456190 bytes, checksum: d37db7743f0a4b55d3c1b071c7d59c04 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2025-09-10T17:58:36Z (GMT).
