The mineral activity sector is so developed and extremely complex in Brazil and abroad, because this economic field presents a wide branching in its productive chain. However, the terminology often used in this segment still lacks studies that describe it and systematize. Thus, this research consists of a descriptive terminological study, whose main objective was the elaboration of a glossary of terms that permeate the activities related to the stages of extraction and beneficiation of iron ore in Brazil, considered the most relevant of the mining project because they involve production and economic exploitation of the mineral well. In this case, we adopt the theoretical-methodological principles of the Communicative Theory of Terminology, they guide a descriptive analysis of specialized domains developed by Maria Teresa Cabré (1993, 1995, 1999, 2005), Barros (2004) and Krieger and Finatto (2020). Methodologically, we have the help of Corpus Linguistics as well for the construction and organization of data of this research. For the identification and selection of applicant status – “lexias” in context of specialized use present in the speech of the area specialty in analysis, in other words, of iron ore – we use the AntConc computer program. The survey and compilation of texts that make up the corpus of this study were made from reading and observation of digital files available on the Vale mining website (www.vale.com) and other websites related to the mineral field. Published books about theory and practice of treatment of minerals (specialized literature) as well as academic and scientific texts related to the specific area are part of our analysis corpus. The terminography final writings of this research – the terminological glossary of the steps of extraction and iron ore – is composed of 353 entries and they are organized alphabetically. Between those, 108 terms include records of denominative variants and six have conceptual variation, evidencing the terminological variation existing in this field and, consequently, proving that variation is a natural and inevitable phenomenon in specialized contexts. The glossary produced, between other purposes, aims to be a work of consultation for professionals who work in mining as well as students of training programs, such as Young Learner, Vocational Training, Internship or Trainee, between other programs offered by mining companies in Brazil for other interested in the area, in order to contribute to the strength of interaction in this context.
