This paper proposes an intersection between Law and Cognitive Linguistics. The paper will discuss the relationships between infidelity, violence and gender – expressed through figurative language – and the possible ways in which they can contribute to a better understanding of legal discourse. The oral statements of the defense in a criminal case of intimate femicide allegedly motivated by infidelity will be analyzed, in a session held at the Jury Court of the District of São Luís/MA. As a provisional hypothesis, it is pointed out that the defense's speech in the aforementioned trial contains social representations of women, in the ideological markers of misogyny, sexism and patriarchy, revealed by conceptual metaphors. To this end, the general objective will be to analyze how figurative language can contribute to a better understanding of the relationships between infidelity, violence and gender in legal discourse, based on the statements recorded herein. The specific objectives are: to define the concepts of gender, femicide, patriarchy and sexual morality, establishing their connections with adultery; to analyze the interpretation and legal argumentation of the discourse, specifically regarding the relationships between law, language and violence; to identify conceptual/discursive metaphors in the aforementioned statements; to explain whether the figurative language present in the discourse examined contributes to the construction of meanings that violate women's dignity. In this way, based on the interpretation of the corpus, it will be possible to understand that there are silent structures that support gender violence in language, whether such violence is veiled or explicit. The importance of this work is revealed to be indisputable when one glimpses the importance of this debate due to the crystal clear violation of human rights resulting from gender violence, which triggers a myriad of other social and economic problems. Thus, it is expected that relevant data will be delivered for a better understanding of this phenomenon, as well as the presentation of results that can contribute to the improvement of policies that lead to the reduction of these numbers, with the creation and implementation of programs aimed at combating and preventing gender violence. The methodological procedure adopted will be sociological-critical, with documentary analyses and case study techniques, and a final monographic textual presentation. As for the approach method, the inductive method will be used, since this is research that works within the theoretical-interpretative sphere of reality. The research will reveal that the defense’s speech in the aforementioned trial uses linguistic and metaphorical strategies that reiterate gender stereotypes, reinforcing patriarchal views on female morality and victim blaming. The cognitive-discursive analysis of the speeches highlighted the recurring use of metaphors such as “honor as a value to be preserved” and “violence as an inevitable reaction”, configuring a symbolic framework that legitimizes gender violence. The results demonstrate that, even in the face of legal and regulatory advances, discursive constructions persist that contribute to the naturalization of violence against women in the judicial space. It is therefore concluded that confronting feminicide requires not only legal measures, but also questioning the sociocultural standards that permeate forensic language and practice.
